Excellent information. Could you clarify how you did the ‘manual’ selection for the DLink driver? I’ve been trying to do this for a while, and nothing I do seems to help; once the device gets detected, even if it was done so as a result of the DLink install, Microsoft takes over. I can’t find anything in the hardware manager to let me change this, either. I’ve got WinXP Pro SP2 and the same device you have.

Also, other web pages mention something about a 2M transfer limit before Cingular will disconnect you?

I have DUN enabled on my Treo 650 and I have been able to successfully pair up my Laptop BlueTooth connection to my Treo, however when I try to connect via DUN my Treo 650 says “UNKNOWN APPLICATION” and therefore DUN does not work properly.

Any ideas?

Yes, working great, the only difference from the setup described above is that the Phone Number: *99***1# did not work for me, instead,I dialed wap.cingular , very good connection, dwl: 104 upl: 87

I’ve had no probelms with Mac OS 10.4.

I have not been able to get this to work in Tiger. I’ve tried both phone numbers suggested above and multiple other combinations. Any ideas on what I’m missing?

I am asked for a pass key on my Treo for my Mac when trying to connect, but will get an error before I put anything in. If I put one in on time, I am asked for a pass key from my Mac for my Treo. Is this supposed to be a specific code or do I just make it up? Nothing seems to happen when I enter a code.

Struggling here. I feel like I’m so close thanks to this site. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi, I already have bluetooth on my laptop preinstalled. I think I did everything correctly, but it says it is connecting and it keeps saying “connection failed.”

Absolutely nothing has worked for me. I have even spent 3 hours with tier three tech support at Cingular and could not get it to work. I give up. I went to the Cingular store and tried connecting with another new Treo 650, and it still does not work. It keeps saying, “Connection Failed” ans “Could not detect modem, it may be in use or not turned on…” I have a brand new Inspiron 9300 with bluetooth. I’ve tried everything possible. All address and numbers are correct… Does anyone have ANY idea what might be the issue?

I managed to get this to work a few days after my last posting on the matter… well, mostly. It seems that Cingular’s data network is not the model of reliability by any stretch of the imagination. Literally, it works sometimes, and sometimes it doesn’t, with no changes on my end other than more hair pulled out.

Cingular may also claim that the data plan you’re on doesn’t support DUN over Bluetooth, and you have to get the $80/month one for that. Not true.

I have a new laptop, which is having Bluetooth config issues in general, but with patience it’ll work again. Granted, the last time I had this working, I was getting one *second* ping times, if they replied at all, so it was virtually unusable for me.

No fancy init strings were needed for me, either.

I am having problems connecting. I get the error 734. The PPP link control protocol was terminated. Any idea on whats going wrong.

I was able to get this set up and working flawlessly almost (almost) from the very start. The only difficulties I had were in regard to the Microsoft Bluetooth-thing others have mentioned; because I already have Blue Soleil installed, if I don’t connect the Treo 650 to my Vaio VGN-FS790 via the existing Blue Soleil, it won’t work. Fortunately, Blue Soleil works very well for Bluetooth connectivity…provided I use only Blue Soleil!

this setup work very well, I have tried it with my Axim pocketPC and a slvr L7 unlocked phone. The only thing is you have to make sure your phone is setup properly in web settings for the gprs as well as type in the password in CAPs otherwise you get an error. Good luck to all trying.

Also an OS X user, also using a Verizon phone, also unable to get this setup working. I’ve gotten it all down to the username/password schpeel, and am stuck at that. I can’t find the information anywhere, and Verizon is already suspicious of my activities… Help is appreciated. ^_^

Hey, I was wondering if you could help me out with a problem…..I just purchased a slvr L7 and its a quad band phone…..but when I put my cingular sim card in it, only phone phone works and nothing else, (internet, text and picture messages). Its works for cingular but I can’t get it to work….Do you know the process in which I can get it to work……Thanks for you time!!

I have PDAnet and am able to use it as a wireless modem for my Dell Laptop with my cable so I can get on the internet…my BIG problem is that I need to use it to connect to my office work station via a VPN when I am traveling…For some reason, it looks like it is trying to log in and then fails to connect and gives me a message it is trying to redial. I had my IT guys call Cingular and Palm and they were both equally unhelpful. Can anyone help me?

For the 734 error try connecting to the web first then going back and enabling the DUN in the BT settings on your Treo. I ran into this error too and that fixed it. I assume it has something to do with authenticating your data connection. There may be a more permenant fix, I’d be glad to know it if you run across it.

Thanks a ton for posting this little tidbit. For the life of me I could not get DUN working using a USB Bluetooth adapter and Windows XP’s built-in Bluetooth drivers.

I saw the comment that I should use the drivers from the Bluetooth radio vendor and voila – it works!

I just got a Treo 650 unlocked for Cingular. I am wanting to quit my DSL at home and use just my treo to connect my laptop to the internet. How do I begin and finish doing this? Thanks

This happens when the name of your computer is the same as the name of your smartphone. Try renaming the computer, reboot and re-pair.

I am attempting to connect my DELL Inspiron E1705 to my Treo 650 via the BT DUN connection. THe dell has BT as standard and the dell uses a Bluetooth Toshiba Stack. I have the right firmware and I can see that the BT connection is okay. Each device (Laptop & 650) can see one another but I do not know where to put the username, password or this *99***1# number for dial up connection. Can any one assist? THANKS

Maybe this will help some of you. I’m using a Belkin Bluetooth adaptor, a Sprint Treo 650 (with the new firmware–unlocked bluetooth DUN) and Windows XP with SP2 & all the latest KB upgrades….

I’ve had limited success with this, but when it works, it does work nicely. I was convinced that the Treo’s pairing was problematic, since my old BT headset was always giving me trouble. I’ve since replaced the headset, and the Treo’s doing nicely with it–so the paring headaches are coming from the computer.

I recently upgraded the Bluetooth software from the Belkin website, and it seemed to help, sort of. By that I mean that pairing still craps out regularly; but at least it’s obvious when it has happened now.

When I want to start a BT conection to the Treo, I first remove the paring between the Treo and the Computer at both ends (I’ve found that it really does matter whether you clear both ends or not):
On the Treo: go into the BT config –> Setup Devices –> Trusted Devices –> [SELECT THE COMPUTER] and remove it.
On the Computer: Right click on the Treo Device and select Unpair.

RE-Pair the devices. I’ve tried paring from both directions, and it seems to work better if you pair from the Computer to the Phone.

Once the pairing is in place, turn on dial-up networking on the phone. Don’t bother trying to connect to the net from the computer’s normal network interfaces–it simply doesn’t work. I open “My Bluetooth Places”, then the treo device, then dial-up-networking. You can tell whether the pairing held if you get the dial-up dialogue.

For my dial-up settings I use: Phone — ‘#777′…. For an ID & Password, I use my Sprint Vision settings–the same ones that the phone uses to connect to VersaMail or Blazer. It turns out that the basic provisioning password is unknown by anyone–so I had to reset it. I wish I could remember how I did that process, but I beleive I handled it through the Sprint website (Been a LONG time ago). Getting past the authentication was a nightmare, because the failure isn’t obvious…..

I’m sure I’ve left a ton out here…I’ll check back and see if it helps…

Unfortunately there’s been nothing simple about this setup…and being as I’m the type of geek who will mess with the technology for the sake of making it work, I’m not entirely sure it’s worth it…but it does work on sprint with XPSP2 and a treo 650 and a belkin dongle…..

i currently have my phone Sony Erricson w810i connected to my dell axim and i’m able to connect my axim to the internet via my phone.

I was wondering if i can do that w/ my treo 650.

I am thinking i’m missing that DUN program so i’m going to try to download etc. But just curious can that be possible.

Cingular wants me to buy the 40/mo plan which i can’t afford and i don’t think it’s worth it.

The GPRS is fine for me.

Any suggestion will help.
